Repositioning a Landmark Hospitality Site in Braintree, MA

A former South Shore landmark. A major hospitality redevelopment. A project shaped by selective demolition, site planning, engineering coordination, and a new vision for a well-known Braintree property.

RJ O’Connell supported the redevelopment of the former Sheraton Tara Hotel site into Hyatt Place Braintree, a 90,000-square-foot hotel with more than 200 guest rooms, a pool, fitness center, health club, meeting rooms, adjacent dining options, and over 400 parking spaces.

Originally developed and operated by The Flatley Company, the Sheraton Tara Hotel opened in 1972 and became a recognizable landmark in Braintree before closing in 2010. Redeveloping the property required a thoughtful approach to site planning, access, circulation, utilities, and selective demolition while preparing the site for its next chapter.

Construction included the selective, surgical demolition of portions of the existing hotel to make way for the new Hyatt Place hotel and surrounding site improvements.

RJOC provided planning, engineering, permitting, and construction-phase services to help coordinate the technical details behind the redevelopment.

The completed Hyatt Place includes more than 200 guest rooms, meeting space, fitness and wellness amenities, a pool, and convenient parking for hotel guests and visitors.

Site improvements helped support circulation, parking, pedestrian access, stormwater management, and long-term functionality across the property.

The redevelopment helped reposition the former hotel campus as an active hospitality and dining destination in Braintree.

In addition to Hyatt Place, the property is now supported by restaurant uses including Legal Sea Foods, Tavern in the Square, and QDOBA Mexican Grill, creating a more complete destination for hotel guests, diners, and the surrounding market.
